Squaring the circle 2
This is the second iteration of this theme ,now with a bronze cube and a larger stainless steel sphere (7 inch diameter).
The genesis of the title is in reference to an ancient exercise given to Sacred Geometry novitiates to make a (drawing of),a square and a circle with the same area using only a compass, and straightedge.
My sculpture here uses only the IDEA of that challenge, but represents it in three dimensions . I make no claim that these two shapes (sphere and cube) actually ARE the same in area, only that there is a special relationship between them,a resonance if you will, that becomes apparent the closer they come to congruent volume.
I am not a numbers guy,by any stretch of the imagination. I AM however a SHAPE guy and all I have been able to learn in the study of Sacred Geometry has come about through the making of the models, starting with the 5 Platonic solids ,then following my curiosity and intuition and exploring the variants...This is how the ancients taught this Art/Science.
I have spoken of this "visceral learning" phenomenon many times. It is as if the knowledge is gained in some direct immediate way unmitigated by the intellect on a cellular level. When you hold this object in your hands there is a sort of sympathetic vibratory response that becomes palpable. I did not know this would happen of course,I was just exploring shapes in the proportions that seemed appropriate for beauty. But this is in essence what the study of Sacred Geometry is all about anyway,to my way of thinking...
